Choppy Playback in DaVinci Resolve Despite Various Optimizations - Need Help!

Hello everyone,
I’m having trouble with choppy playback when editing in DaVinci Resolve Studio and I’m hoping someone here can help me out. Despite following various tips and adjusting settings, I still can’t get smooth playback, I can only reach 18/20 fps. Here’s a breakdown of my issue and the steps I’ve taken so far:

My PC Specifications:

  • CPU: Intel® Core ™ i9-10900KF CPU @3.70Ghz
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070
  • RAM: 64GB
  • Storage:
    • SSD for cache
    • SSD for project files
    • SSD for footage
  • OS: [Window 10]

Steps I've Already Taken:

  1. Using SSDs for Different Purposes:
    • Cache, project files, and footage are all on separate SSDs to optimize performance.
  2. Creating Proxies: I’ve created proxy files to reduce the load on the system.
  3. Adjusting Playback Settings:
    • Reduced playback resolution (Timeline proxy resolution to quarter)
    • Tried various playback settings to find the optimal configuration.
    • Use Proxy and Effects Disable
    • Using a 1080 timeline with 4k footage
  4. Other Tips Tried:
    • Render cache set to Smart.
  5. Details on the Issue when I play with proxy and effects disable:
    • The playback is still choppy and not smooth, I only get 18 to 20 fps out of 25fps.
    • When playing the timeline, the Task management - Performance says:
    • CPU usage 40% (max)
    • GPU 25%
    • Memory 17Gb ( out of 64 Gb), despite in DaVinci Resolve preference the limit is set to max, 47GB

I’m not sure what else to try at this point. Could it be an issue with my hardware, or is there something in the software settings I might have missed? Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!

In the task manager, under performance, how hard is the drive running. Sounds like the computer is buffering.. Have you tried a clean boot (disable everything in the startup tab). You've got something running in the background that is causing your problem

Also, How long does it take from the time you press the power button until you get to the login screen?

Just saw your thread and felt that you descibe the same exact problem I got right now. In fact I wrote another tread just tonight... Did you solve the playback ? I will check today for any other backround disturbance .... What kills my understanding is that in Premiere everything works like expected....

I too would love to know where the bottleneck is. Going full screen (ctrl+F) alleviates a lot of the problem for me. Also, the simplest of video, an audio waveform while choosing background music is also artifacting and jittery until you go full screen. I don't think it is a machine performance issue!

My setup:
Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus
ASUS ProArt WiFi Creator motherboard
Intel Arc B580 GPU
64GB RAM
Samsung 9100 2TB SSD
Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD
LG Ultra HD 4K 60Hz monitor connected to iGPU***, scaling 150%.
Windows 11 Pro fully updated
Intel drivers 32.0.101.9033 (currently, seen in many version prior to this)
Resolve v21 latest, using AV1 encoding in general on Arc B580

I'm thinking it is probably the OpenCL path to the display that is the problem. I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything about getting Intel to fix their OpenCL code for Resolve. I've noted that their driver release notes always shows a "PugetBench for Davinci Resolve Studio* may experience an intermittent application crash while running the benchmark. Recommendation is to change the timeout slider to 1500 seconds or higher, to wait for each test to complete, in PugetBench* benchmark settings." But that was applying to the B580 itself, not necessarily the video preview pane causing issues. I could see that having an issue there that slows down the overall performance could cause benchmark issues though.

Input video is 4K HEVC, 29.97fps, timeline is 4K 29.97fps. All proxy/cache video set to DNxHR HQ, proxy media resolution set to "Choose automatically". This machine should breeze through the video preview playback!

anyone?

*** The reason for this is that when doing 4K renders on the B580, it consumes most if not all the memory and bandwidth it has, making the machine useless for anything else while rendering.

Since editing with the current badly lagging preview player in Resolve with 4K video is basically impossible, I started rolling back Intel drivers from 32.0.101.9033 using the WHQL certified drivers and hit 32.0.101.8864 that seems to have solved it. I'm gonna stick with it until I know for sure that any updated drivers don't break this path.
