Still alive and hoping for a solution

Hi,
I’ve been doing animations with iClone for Youtube movies for a few years now. I am working on a new movie and, since I’ve been studying Davinci resolve assiduously, , I intend to use it for post-production on my next movie. But I have a problem. Davinci resolve keep freezing regularly. I have done everything and I don’t know what else to do.

I have 128GB of RAM
I don’t use Fusion
I have the latest nVidia drivers for my RTX 5090 with 32 GB of VRAM
I use proxy files at quarter resolution
I clean my render cache regularly

I am happy to be a member of this group,

You have a powerhouse with those specs. You definitely shouldn't be seeing freezes, especially at quarter-resolution. The issue is likely how Windows or Resolve is 'handshaking' with that high-end hardware.

Here are a few things you should check:

Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS): This is a known issue for the RTX 40 and 50 series in Windows 11. Go to Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings and toggle it OFF. It often conflicts with Resolve’s own memory management.

Switch to NVIDIA Studio Drivers: If you are on 'Game Ready' drivers, they can be unstable for professional rendering. Do a 'Clean Install' of the latest Studio Driver version.

Manual GPU Configuration: In Resolve, go to Preferences > System > Memory and GPU. Uncheck 'Auto' for both GPU Selection and GPU Processing Mode. Manually select CUDA and check your RTX 5090 specifically.

Check iClone Export Codecs: iClone exports can sometimes have non-standard headers in their H.264/H.265 files. Even with proxies, Resolve's background decoder might trip over them. Try transcoding a single clip to DNxHR HQX or ProRes and see if the freezing persists on that specific footage.

Power Management: In the NVIDIA Control Panel, set 'Power Management Mode' to Prefer Maximum Performance. Sometimes the GPU tries to 'downclock' during light scrubbing, causing the UI to hang.

Turn off 'Live Save' as a Test: Go to Preferences > User > Project Save and Load. If 'Live Save' hits a drive with even a millisecond of latency, it can freeze the UI. Switch to 'Project Backup' every 5–10 minutes instead and see if the stability returns."

I hope some of these tips will stop the freezing issue. Good Luck!
