Ripple deleting only video (training instructions not working for me)

I'm following the first Introduction to Editing tutorial from the DaVinci website.

At ~38 minutes, it tells me to ripple delete video without deleting the linked audio:

1. Select the clip
2. Use the ALT key to select just the video, without selecting the linked audio
3. Use SHIFT-BACKSPACE (PC) to "Ripple Delete".

I am...

1. Selecting the clip
2. Using the ALT key to select just the video, without selecting the linked audio

3. Pressing SHIFT-BACKSPACE to Ripple Delete (the video says Shift-Del, but on the PC it seems like Shift-Backspace)

This deletes both the video, AND audio.

I've also tried:

  • Ripple Delete via the right-click context menu
  • Shift-DEL (does nothing)
  • DEL (deletes both)
  • Just BACKSPACE (deletes the video, does not ripple)
  • "Ripple Cut" (same issue; both with keyboard shortcut and context menu)
  • Locking the audio track (this deletes only the video, but desynchs the audio from subsequent clips)
  • Toggling "Disable Sync Lock"
  • Using the opposite methodology (turning off linking for the full track, then ripple-deleting the video; this still deletes both)
  • Closing and re-opening Davinci Resolve and trying the above again
I feel stupid asking, but how does ripple delete work for just video?

Hi there, I'm brand new to DaVinci Resolve and I'm having the same issue as you. A workaround I found is to
1) Turn on Linked Selection
2) Hold Alt + click on the video clip, selecting it and not the audio
3) Hit Backspace to delete the video clip
4) Drag the audio clip so that its end snaps to the end of the previous video clip
5) Right click on the gap where the video+audio clips used to be and click "Ripple Delete"

I don't know why the Ripple Delete button doesn't work like we expect Ripple Delete to work. But I tried a bunch of stuff, including all the stuff you tried, and this process is the only way I found to recreate the functionality that the tutorial video demonstrates.

Did you try pressing DELETE to delete the video, then actually clicking the blank space in the timeline where the video used to be, then hitting DELETE again?

Even I am facing the same issue and they should either mention it somewhere or update the tutorial because it can cause a lot of confusion

You can also lock the audio track in the left side next to the "A1" and then it will not cut into, delete, or ripple the locked track(s). I use this if I have already set up background music and I don't want subsequent edits on the final content edit passes to affect the background music track.
