Mismatched resolutions in nested timelines

Good day everyone,

I think this question has been asked multiple times, but no matter how many videos, blog posts, and tutorials I follow, I can't get around it: mismatched resolutions.
I fully understand how that works with multiple media on a single timeline, but not when I nest timelines.
I'm not a professional video editor, and I'm transitioning from Premiere, so my workflow my not be common. Here's what I do:

I create a project as 2160p25 with all input/output mismatched resolution settings as center crop with no resizing. I will import photos from a Canon R5 at full resolution and I want to manipulate scaling "manually" on the timeline.
I create a 2160p25 timeline overriding project settings and once again setting mismatched resolution as center crop with no resizing.
I create a 1080p25 timeline overriding project settings and once again setting mismatched resolution as center crop with no resizing, and add a 1080p25 video into it; the video fills the frame.
I add the 1080p timeline into the 2160p25 timeline; the smaller timeline appears with the video at the correct resolution, but with a black background filling the rest.
The only solution I've found so far is to set the media in the 1080p timeline to "fit" in the inspector panel, but I'm doing this nested timelines stuff so I can quickly swap media in the 1080p timeline without changing any settings, anywhere.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a proven workflow to nest timelines with mismatched timelines in DaVinci?
