Best quality settings for GoPro footage rendering

dirk

Founder DVRF
I use DaVinci Resolve 19. I recorded a field hockey game with two different Go Pro from both ends of the field.

One GoPro Hero 9 in 4k linear
One GoPro Hero 5 in 1080p in superwide

I created 2 different projects. One for each camera because of the different resolution of both cameras.

I put all the mini videos of one canera in my timeline and go to the export tab. I have many different options there to render the video.

Which one do I have to use to get the best quality?

I tried H265master, Youtube 4k for GoPro 9 and for the GoPro 5 Youtube 1080p, but no matter which setting I try, the quality is significant worse than the original file. With both cams.

Is this a GoPro problem or do I need other settings?

But Dirk I thought you knew everything since you are the forum founder :) Are you trying to multicam them or create two separate videos? If you're trying to multicam them, you can bring 1080p footage into a 4k timeline and then upscale it to 4k using the Superscale feature. Then you can just edit them together and export regularly.

As for best export settings, especially for youtube, try Custom Export, Format MP4, Codec H.265, then under Quality select Restrict to and set it to around double your framerate x1000. So if your framerate is 30fps set it to 60,000. Heard that from Casey Faris I think.

No, I create forums if I want to learn more about something I am interested in myself, That is egoistic, but it works

For field hockey, these will be separate videos. Each goal has one cam monted behind the goal on a big tripod. Maybe a third cam will record also from the side.

The trainer needs these videos to analyse with the kids what they did good and bad. He will then pick the most important scenes to discus them with the kids.

I will try that tomorrow. I made some recording tests and the GoPro is no really good with overheating. As it turned out, if I want to record more than 1 hour without changing batteries and without forced shut down because of overheating, I have to set the GoPro5 to maximum 1080p 30fps, GoPro9 at 4k 25p and the DJI Action 5 to 4k 30p, but will reduce that to 25p to have the same settings with the GoPro9.

Action cams seem not to be good for long, contionious recording on a tripod without wind. I did already all the usual tips like turn off antishake, turn off screen, etc. The bodies are just too small. The onkly way to increase from 20 minutes to over an hour is to reduce the fps as much as possible. But I need the action cams, because with fieldhockey, they water the lawn in each break and the cameras will get really wet.
