auto align of short clip to long master audio deletes beginning of master audio

I've got a master audio track (about 3min 11 sec long) to which I'm trying to align a short clip. The short clip (24 sec) has audio than matches part of the longer master audio track starting around 46sec in, ending around 1min. When I do auto align clips, (using waveform match) it correctly aligns the clip but ALSO cuts about 30 sec off the beginning of the master audio clip! Now the master audio track starts ~30 secs in. The beginning master audio appears to be gone, in the timeline -- it's not like its just being hidden to the left. This happens regardless of which reference audio I select for auto align (Audio 1,2,3, Mix, or Automatic)

What am I doing wrong/how can I make Resolve stop doing this?

NM, it seems I have to pretty closely manually align the short clip to the master audio first, and then do auto align (with the master clip as reference) . This appears to preserve the entire master audio. Whew.

What about aligning a wild audio clip with a camera clip with no sound? A sort of Resolve lip reading. I wonder if zStudio’s AI is clever enough to do that
