audio and video smashed together, can't unlink

Hi, I'm a relative newbie, I have created a few videos before on DVR but today I'm trying to edit 2 media files, one .mov from my olympus camera and one .mp4 from my galaxy smartphone. I've used materials before from both platforms. Today when I either drag media into the timeline or choose a segment from the preview view and insert it, the video and audio are part of the same clip, not just linked, but of a piece so they can't be individually selected. How did this happen? ...tia....

Oh, I was looking at "CUT" view instead of "EDIT" view. duh.
